Cold War The drive behind American Policy during the Cold War was concerned with National Security Ideological concerns focusing on democracy and economical structure of American capitalism and World economy During the final days of World War II these would take on separate degrees of importance to American policy When Truman assumed the presidency after Roosevelts death he quickly took a belligerent stance toward the Soviet Union Truman used tactics he referred to as tough methods at delegations during the Potsdam Conference Truman became bossy after learning of the successful test of Americas atomic bomb These halted postwar issues at a deadlock and set in motion the mentality of the Cold War Germany lost the war and was divided into four zones of occupation controlled by the United States France Britain and the Soviet Union At Potsdam the Allies agreed to disarm the country dismantle its military production facilities and permit the occupying powers to extract reparations from the zones they controlled Plans for the future reunification stalled however as the United States and the Soviet Union each worried that a united Germany would fall into the others sphere The disagreement between the rivaling powers Governments created the tension that was going to build into the Cold War The United States first answer to its fear of growing Communism was the Policy of Containment To stop Soviet expansionism Kennan argued the United States should pursue a policy of firm containment at every point where the Russians show signs of encroaching upon the interests of peaceful and stable world It was in Americas best interest to contain Communism and create Democratic governments whereever possible This is to maintain the ideological concerns of Capitalists and open trade between Democratic governments This would increase the economy of world trade in the best interests of the United States Foreign policy frequently has to be made on the basis of inadequate information and under
