People make decisions that other people do not agree with or would even support well that is exactly what Branch Rickey the manager and owner of the Dodgers did on August 28th 1945 What he did people made fun of him questioned him and called him crazy but if he listened to them and did not follow through with his decision professional sports would not be where they are today The rash decision was signing Jackie Robinson an African American to a Major League baseball contract At this time segregation was impacting the Southern and Eastern parts of the United States more than it was the Western parts Jackie Robinson went through a lot of tough times during his Major League career People do not realize that Jackie Robinson impacted African Americans as much as he did Professional sports As a boy Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo GA on June 31st 1919 After Jackies father abandoned his mother Mallie she moved them from Cairo to Pasadena CA Life was not easy while they had to deal with poverty hunger and an uneasy racial situation they managed to survive while the kids stayed out of trouble with playing sports Jackies brother was a member of the 1936 Olympic team and finished second to Jesse Owens in the 200 meter dash in Berlin Jackie entered Pasadena Junior College in 1937 immediately distinguished him as a top athlete It was his record at UCLA that gave him national attention he was the first man to letter in four sports at UCLA baseball basketball football and track While serving in the Army as a lieutenant in June 1944 at Fort Hood Texas he refused to get to the back of the bus as it was the bus drivers orders He was court-martialed for insubordination acquitted and received an honorable discharge Rickey decided that Robinson possessed the combination of intelligence talent and experience with whites because of his playing
