In this research paper I will demonstrate the relationship between Baldwins writing about the sufferings of African American in America in comparison to its effects on households in America In order to address this topic I will analyze the absence of communication and its effect on the relationships between Sonny and the people in his household The characters were affected in numerous ways as they are subjected to many forms of adversities whether it is from grief poverty addiction or the presence of limited opportunities Some succumbed to their sufferings while others try to overcome these challenges although it may be inevitable Suffering in this story has been made evident through the lack of communication that stems from decaying family bonds which can be witnessed through the relationship with Sonny and his older brother Drug usage becomes an outlet for Sonny to escape the agony that was felt from being alone In addition the reassessment of self-identification allows Sonnys brother to understand his own personal suffering through his brothers anguish Individual in this story dealt with their issues in different ways that resulted in their personal sorrow In my opinion their purpose was to serve as a testament of life Post World War II This story exposes the darkness of Harlem its poor infested neighborhoods and the environments that have affected African Americans HISTORICAL CONTEXTTo begin with we can analyze the historical context in which the story is written The writing of this story took place during the early 1950s The action of the story occurs during the dark days of segregation and separate but equal role in public institutions The narrator and Sonny have grown up in predominately black and poor infested neighborhoods of Harlem the children of a working-class resentful father whose pride and hopefulness was diminished by the violent death of his brother at the hands of Southern whites and the subsequent years of struggling to support a family in
