It is no doubt that throughout time ideas and theories have changed What was believed 20 years ago might not be the same today One of the many changes throughout time has been societys view towards women Women since the beginning time have fought to have a voice and be where we are today As we look back in time we see findings that supported womens suppression and allowed men to see us as inferior Today we will discuss Jean Baker-Millers findings on the new psychology of women and how relation cultural theory influence the importance of mutual understanding between men and women despite what gender roles impose upon usOld psychology of women was very different from the way men were described In old psychology men were perceived and treated as superior compared to women Women were often described as weak and not having the intelligence to achieve what men could Men and women had different types of intelligence Womens intelligence was considered to be more emotional Women were portrayed as nurturers and caretakers Men on the other hand were the breadwinners and head of the householdIn Towards a new psychology of women the author Jean Baker Miller purpose is to bring a different light on the way women are portrayed in psychology In this book we see the difference between the way men and women were seen in society A very important topic she comes across is permanent inequality Permanent inequality describes subordinates and dominants In this case we will use women and men Men are considered to be the dominant group and women the subordinates A great example JBM uses in Towards A New Psychology is when she explains how the dominant group becomes the model for normal human relationships It then becomes normal to treat others destructively and to derogate them The normal is for dominants to destructively put subordinates down in different waysOften the dominant group is
