Serial killers have become something of a phenomenon in the United States Throughout American history serial killers have both captivated and horrified their fellow citizensWhat could lead seemingly ordinary people to commit the most grotesque of actsNotorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer killed 17 men between from 1978 to 1991 He was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms and then murdered by a prison inmate in 1994 In this paper I will talk about Jeffrey Dahmers early life the crimes he committed and his reasoning behind his actionsNotorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer son of Lionel and Joyce Dahmer was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin on May 21 1960 He was a happy child with a rather normal upbringing until the age of 6 when a minor surgery to correct a double hernia seemed to change him in negative way After Dahmers surgery which was at the same time as the birth of his brother he became increasingly limited and lacking in self-confidenceA career opportunity for his father caused the family moving from Iowa to Ohiowhich only worsened young Jeffreys insecurities By his early teens he was an alcoholic who was largely disengaged and reclusiveWhen asked why he became this way he answered because from about the age 15 on up most of my thoughts becameunshareableJust after he graduated from high school in June 1978 Dahmer picked up a hitchhiker named Steven Hicks and took him home to his parents house The two had hit it off well for the rest of the night they drank beer and had sex When Hicks tried to leave Dahmer killed him with a blow to the head with a barbell He dismembered the corpse of his first victim packed them in plastic bags and buried them in the woods behind his parents house It would be nine more years until he took his second victim Around the same time of his first killing Dahmers alcohol consumption had gotten out
