Jimmy awoke with reveille but wasnt really sure what day of the week it was He had to do some quick arithmetic to realize that it was Saturday He had been in Dsseldorf for about 22 weeks now yet it seemed longer The Japanese had surrendered when he was still in boot camp and by the time he had been deployed to Germany they too had surrenderedHe lay there for a moment in his bunk feeling the scratchiness of the wool Army issue blanket under his chin It was rather chilly in the barrack and he certainly wasnt in any hurry to throw it off and face the drafty barrackToday being Saturday meant that it was Jimmys day off Once his Unit had arrived in Germany they were given orders as Military Police and were acting as local law enforcement Each time Jimmy walked the streets with his company he was amazed at the fact that there were simply no men of his age anywhere to be found All you saw were older men and very young primary school aged boys This was due to the fact that most able bodied men between the ages of 14 and 40 had been recruited by the Nazis to fight against the Allied ForcesHe pondered that thought again for another ten seconds along with what he was going to do with his day off today finally he surmised the wherewithal to get out of his bunk Wanting to brave the chilly dormitory for shortest amount of time as possible Jimmy quickly threw on his fatigues and a sweatshirt over his undershirt He also put on fresh socks half-heartedly laced up his boots smoothed over his hair with his hands grabbed his dollop kit and headed to the latrine to shaveHey J-man morning said AngeloNever mind good morning do you have that two bucks you owe me palCmon J-man you know Im good for itJimmy made a singsong
