What is nobler living a life full of shame while being able to be around loved ones or dying a hero in a courageous act against an insane society John Proctor believed that the second choice was the right thing to do and sacrificed his life to protect his name John Proctor achieved the title of a tragic hero for various reasons He was one of the few people in Salem who would stand up for the truth and when the corrupt court tried to convince him to condemn himself to save his life Proctor was unable Proctors high self-pride stopped him from saving his life by following the courts orders The court was putting his name in the dirt and it was not something Proctor was willing to give for his life Proctor was also unable to completely condemn himself and regain his life because of his high value of reputation He could not live with his reputation being soiled in the eyes of the town and him being seen as a coward And lastly Proctors Honesty prevented him from reclaiming his life from the hands of the judges Proctors characteristic of honesty was so profound that he was unable to lie to save his own life John Proctors pride reputation and honesty in The Crucible all lead him to his doom and solidify his place as a tragic hero in this novelProctors high reputation leadership role amongst the townspeople and the terror or fear that his downfall inspire all affirm that he was a tragic hero Hawthornes use of loose periodic and telegraphic sentences also illustrate how he could not witness his reputation being ruined at the hands of the court and he chose death instead This quote by Parris It cannot be forgot sir that when I summoned the congregation for John Proctors excommunication there were hardly thirty people come to hear it That speak a great discontent I think
