This paper is going to focus on utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill and will also provide some weaknesses related to this idea Mills idea of utilitarianism was first published in three installments in 1861 It has been a part of the base of the western thought The democratic government system also has an idea of utilitarianism pursuing greatest amount of good for the greatest numbers of peopleUtilitarianism is an idea written by Mill to prove that utilitarianism is a moral theory His theory is based on the principle that actions are appropriate and right if they lead to provide happiness and inappropriate if they lead to reverse of happiness He also clarifies happiness as higher pleasure with no pain He argues that when people achieve virtuous living as an end goal it should be considered as part of their happiness Mill argues that utilitarianism overlaps with sentiments arising from the social nature According to him happiness is the only foundation of morality and that people should desire nothing but happiness Hence if a person is opting for pleasure as a final result and avoiding pain he is opting for happiness Mill talks about two types of pleasures humanistic and animalistic Humanistic pleasure is of higher quality and is the highest amount of pleasure and when given a chance we humans would always choose higher pleasure When addressing the question about morality the actions of a person would be considered to be moral if they are performed to increase the greatest good for the greatest numbers In other words according to Mill actions dont matter only the consequences and the end result matters Unlike Kant Mills theory does not focus on bad intention Cahn S 2011 Mill begins his work by addressing the question of epistemology He clarifies two different ideas about morality that morals are a priori or they are assumed from observation and experience Mill does not support either system but he does argue
