Judging by CharacterCharacter cannot be developed in ease and quiet only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened ambition inspired and success achieved quoted by Helen Keller We all strive to gain character and integrity in life well most of us do But how do you attain it Its quick and easy to categorize people without taking some time to get to know them In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout starts to understand what character is She is shown examples of character from her father Atticus She is also shown examples of character through other characters as well All this helps her judge others based on character instead of their outer appearance or family backgroundAtticus teaches his children integrity and character by showing them how to act by his own actions When Scout asks why Atticus took the Tom Robinson case when everyone thought it was wrong he replies with saying The one thing that doesnt abide by majority rule is a persons conscience 108 He tells Scout you should not be influenced by others opinions when you are deciding what is wrong or right At home he does not act differently than he does at town He tells Scout that even if the whole world thinks you are wrong you should still do what you think is right That is the standard that he lived by He makes an honored decision even though it isnt the popular one a decision that holds integrity When Bob Ewell spits in Atticuss face and he refuses to fight Bob Ewell taunts him Too proud to fight you nigger-lovin bastard and Atticus calmly responds with No too old 217 By not responding to Bob Ewell Atticus shows his integrity in his response it is often assumed that in this situation you would fight or retort back with an insult but Atticus does neither setting an example for his kids Instead of sinking down to
