I have a very vivid memory from my childhood when my family took a boatout on lake Michigan one summer The air was warm and the water wascool My sisters and brothers and I tied our floaties and water raftstogether to make one very large raft-island We were all together andnothing could touch us Our parents stayed on the boat but made surethat we were in sight and threw us snacks and pop when we were hungry orthirsty In my memory that day was perfect The next summer was thefirst summer that one of my brothers went away to college and two othersdidnt come on our summer vacation because they went to basketball campinstead I didnt know it at the time but that day was the last memoryI have of all of us together before girlfriends and boyfriends startedjoining the mix I treasured this memory for 15 years until lastChristmas when my dad decided to digitize all of our old home videos As it happens the summer of the raft-island was documented As Iwatched the video I saw my favorite memory play out in a very differentway In reality this day was not the picturesque moment in historythat I recalled The day was full of laughter and fun however it wasnot without a few rather jarring flaws as well The raft-islandpartially deflated after about a half hour after its creation My oldersister spent a good amount of the day tricking me into pulling heraround on her personal raft while she read which whoever wasvideo-taping found hilarious My younger sister almost drowned Mymother grounded me and three of my brothers several times for gettingher wet and to top it all off I got a horrific sunburn Afterwatching the video I couldnt help wondering why my mind made this dayto be so picturesque The memory I created did not take into
