Standard 1 My Reflection on Child Development While I was interested to read about the research of Piaget andVygotsky I think I already understood their discoveries at an instinctuallevel The formal instruction I received in the class seemed to reinforcemy existing understanding However when I read about Kohlbergs stages ofmoral reasoning I was fascinated Like Piaget and Vygotsky I think Ialready understood Kohlbergs point but I had never considered moraldevelopment in the way that Kohlberg presented it This new perspectivehas helped me to better structure my classroom rules and to reconsider theways that I respond to students who struggle with personal responsibility When I started teaching I treated my students with an approach thatmight be appropriate for a drill sergeant or a prison guard I focused onthe rules and punished every violation regardless of the context This wassomewhat out of character for me and soon I recognized a need to changemy approach Since that time I have focused more on my primary goal as ateacher to prepare my students to contribute effectively to theircommunities when I am dealing with discipline issues Kohlberg has helpedme to understand that it is normal for my students to view rules andbehavior differently than I view them This understanding has led me tostop trying to change my students moral reasoning but instead to plantthe seeds that will enable my students to develop better behaviors as theymature Kohlberg has also helped me to understand that my students andsome of my colleagues view behavior differently because they are simply ata different stage of moral reasoning While I may not agree with theirreasoning with Kohlbergs help I am better able to understand theirreasoning and to present options in ways that help strengthen our learningcommunityStandard 2 School Philosophy and School Organization In my current role I teach 11th
