Language is an essential building block in a society it gives people an identity and fortifies a country However when people migrate to America language is controversially a setback Many people struggle learning the language and feel that they should stick with their native tongue which usually leaves them verbally challenged However others feel its a must to learn the language if they want a voice These two viewpoints represent Gloria Anzalduas and Richard Rodriguezs differences Rodriguez and Anzaldua both illustrate the challenges that socially disadvantaged adolescents face when trying to assimilate with the American society They both struggle with the usage of language and finding their definitive identity However due to many variables that influence a person they end up having two different viewpoints on how to assimilate and what having an identity entitlesLanguage is more than just a tool of communication instead language bridges people within a country and unifies them through a common entity As a child Spanish was the language that unified Rodriguez with his family and other Spanish speakers he believed that Spanish speakers were related to him for they not only felt connected thorough their language but they had a sense of exclusivity that separated him from others 262 Similarly Anzaldua felt the same sentiments when she first read a Chicano novel she felt a sort of connection and joy Anzaldua states I felt like we really existed as a people implying that language not only unifies a country but gives them a sense of pride and a sense of existence 253 Even though language brings people together it can also build a cultural barrier if people dont share a common language it makes it difficult for them to interact When assimilating people need to learn the language of their host country in order to interact efficiently with the people in their surroundings however many migrants have different views on how to use their languages when interacting
