For my first Air Command and Staff College paper I will detail my leadership philosophy summarize a commander interview concerning squadron continuation training and provide an analysis of the interview I have been a member of the Air Force for eleven years as an enlisted member and officer to which I have seen many different leadership styles To develop my own leadership method I have taken many cues from my former commanders that have instilled in me the core values and the mindset to always praise your subordinates in public while criticizing them behind closed doors Not every commander I recall was perfect but they had one theme in common be direct Giving the squadron clarity and a vision helps promote unity to which all airmen can appreciate To be a commander of a flying squadron includes many different responsibilities Sortie generation flying schedules administrative paperwork awards and punishments just to name a few If I was squadron commander of my current unit there would be many meetings to juggle and squadron concerns that extend beyond the flight line I have always relied on the three core values to be my moral compass and shape my leadership philosophy Colonel Myers wrote an article concerning core values and states integrity first points directly to the moral agent-to the airmans character1 This is the number one core value I look upon for leaders to exude If a leader does not uphold a moral character then I begin to question their judgment The two other core values of service before self and excellence in all we do can also be used as a test to determine how much fortitude a commander upholds For example staying overtime until the job is done shows the squadron how much dedication to the mission a leader possessesColonel Myers goes on to write that core values are a map to any
