I find it rather amusing that the proper term for the guiding principle of my life escapes the net of thought The philosophy from which I draw direction is known as The Boy Scout Code which places an emphasis on leaving the world better off for following generations This is also complemented by refusing to take an unfair advantage against others In a way it is quite ironic that I live by this principle given my non-existent scouting history I never came to appreciate the focus on badges trials and the general regimentation that were associated with being a boy scout However the logic that frames their simple philosophy rings timelessly true and is easily applied to nearly any situation This makes the code an ideal candidate to structure a life around The code I follow provides basic guidelines for lifes numerous decisions For reference a close friend was in need of several percussion theory books I currently owned yet he was short on the money to purchase the books I offered to give him mine seeing as my passion for percussion had dried up in the recent months he insisted on repaying or at least compensating his implied debt I refused his offers instead leaving the books in his locker with a note encouraging him that he would benefit from these books more than I ever could While this event was not a bombastic showing of kindness it still improved both of our lives It would have been rather easy to pocket whatever money I could shake him down for yet that would have ultimately detract from the friendship we still share While I certainly hope he would do the same for me in a similar situation I have already left the impression I wanted to make When putting this lifestyle into practice it is important to focus on
