I have often found myself asking the question should America legalize drugs There are many different viewpoints affecting this question I have gathered statical data from several web sites While I was reviewing what the NIDA National Institute on Drug Abuse it was compelling to learn that marijuana is a very small portion of drug abusers Since there has been growing debates about the use of marijuana and legalizing the drug I thought I will delve further into these debates From about 1907 till 1933 hemp was a large textile industry in the United States Hemp is the same weed that produces marijuana Hemp was a valuable asset because it is stronger and softer than cotton Hemp can also be grown in a variety of climates and zones It also has a 120 day growth period relatively short Approximately 30 of our nations leaders have admitted to smoking marijuana Illicit drug trafficking is a big business even more astounding is America spends more and more money to fuel the war on drugs Over 15 billion dollars was spent in 2010 each year that bill increases We could take all the assets spent on the war on drugs and utilized them to lessen our national debt Amsterdam has had made a classification of hard and soft drugs allowing Netherlands residents to legally partake in soft drugs Soft drugs are classified as marijuana and opiates In one study it showed that many of the residents average age of 28 years old have never tried soft drugs The argument is once you de glamorize drugs the desire to use and abuse them goes away Once use and abuse goes away the crime also is minimalized That is exactly what experience the residents of the Netherlands discoveredSurprisingly the United States put a patent on medical marijuana
