Dwight David Eisenhower Dwight David Eisenhower was the thirty fourth president to serve for the United States He was born in Denison Texas on October 14 1890 After a short time living in Texas David Eisenhower decided to move his family to Abilene Kansas Dwight graduated from Abilene High School in 1909 In 1910 he received an appointment to West Point he got in and graduated as a second lieutenant in 1915 While in Fort Sam Houston Tex he met Mamie Geneva Doud The two of them got married in Denver Colorado on July 1 1916 Soon after Mamie had two sons Dwight Doud and John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower Dwight died at the age of four years In 1952 Dwight Eisenhower won the presidential nomination on the first ballot it was a close call with Senator Robert A Taft of Ohio His reputation as a World War II hero and his promise to end the Korean War brought him an easy win over Adlai E Stevenson his Democratic opponent He then took office on January 20 1953 Eisenhower succeeded his campaign pledge when a peace treaty was signed on July 1953 in Korea after he threatened to use nuclear weapons Defense treaties were signed with South Korea in 1953 and Taiwan in 1954 The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization was developed in 1954 to block Communist from coming in Asia After the French lost the battle of Dienbienphu and drew back form Indochina Dwight Eisenhower sent Military help to South Vietnam After the death of Soviet leader Josef Stalin in 1953 he tried to calm the cold war tension His atoms for peace plan and his statements at the Geneva summit conference in July 1955 were announced throughout At home Eisenhower was concerned about a balanced budget at a time when defense charges were rising fast as well as his commitment to limiting the role of the social welfare programs begun by
