Black Women Rock is what is encouraged today and it would appear historically they have for years With our Josephine Bakers and Dorothy Dandridges paving the way along with others Bad luck in love failure with children and a life of continued financial struggles are some of the life trials they faced while riding the glamorous star of world entertainment to stardom Josephine Baker and Dorothy Dandridge were the crme de la crme whether on the stage or in a motion pictures these women knew how to work it A woman who had survived an urban ghetto and transferred herself into one of the most exciting performers of this century Josephine Baker was born in 1906 in St Louise Learning at an early age the sense of rejection from both her parents Josephine went to stay with her grandmother Later returning to her mothers home only to find that her siblings mother and step farther were living in poor conditions Josephine was sent out to make ends meet at a young age to help support the family Masking her unhappiness and insecurities behind superficial joy and humor at the age of 15 Josephine joined the Jones Family Band became a member of the Dixie Strippers chorus line and then was a part of a black traveling production call Shuffling Along By the time Josephine reached the age 19 and traveled to the gay Paree she was a young star in the shimmering universe of black nightclubs and theaters including the Cotton Club and the Apollo Theater Over the next decade Josephine would shock and engage the entertainment world with her free-spirited celebration of the human body and her outspoken opinion on political issues only returning to America occasionally but considering Paris her home Though not from the lack of trying Josephine love life was an unsuccessful one having a total of five marriages Also becoming pregnant by a French officer which resulted in a
