Linda Greenlaw captain and fisherman describes the experience in leading the Hannah Boden on a routine monthly fishery During her trip she is faced with several decisions that may or may not determine the outcome of the trip Before Linda and her crew depart to see Linda starts the process of what every organization must tend to planning organizing leading and controlling PLANNING Days before setting out to sea Linda begins the planning process which is setting goals and organizational direction also to define the organizations objectives and goals Linda comments that Preparing a boat for a month-long fishing trip involves so much work and such a high degree of organization that when the time comes to cast the lines off the dock I have often breathed a sigh of relief knowing that the most unpleasant part of the trip is over and the best is yet to come Every trip includes developing a comprehensive hierarchy of plans to integrate and coordinate activities This all starts as soon as the fish from the previous trip is unloaded The crew then begins scrubbing and sanitizing of the fish hold As Linda prepares for the trip and while the cleaning was being done Tom Ringo Lindas first mate and cook headed to the grocery store to grub up shop for food for the six crew members for the next thirty-day boat ride Planning for a trip includes assuring that every item is up to standard and of high quality Lets have a look at the stuff before we put it all aboard Linda said recalling preparations for a recent trip when she had refused 12000 pounds of squid sending it back to the cold-storage plant because of its poor quality Kenny jumped out of the truck with a 40-pound cardboard box of frozen bait and laid it on the rail of the boat opening the top for my inspection The bait was as gorgeous as any squid
