Deception occurs when a speaker transmits information knowingly and intentionally for the purpose of creating a false belief in the receiver Floyd 384 This idea of deception has been planted in our minds as children and soon as we were able to speak As humans it is not only our natural tendency to trust others but it is also easier for us to do so In a situation where the receiver believes they might be deceived from the speaker it would be beneficiary to take the HURIER model into account In the personal example I am using of the time I was deceived I analyzed the situation by using the key concepts of the HURIER model hearing understanding remembering interpreting evaluating and responding and was able to determine that I was being deceived One of my first jobs was in retail at a store called Charlotte Russe When working in retail you quickly find out that people will try just about any way to steal from the company Throughout the two and a half years of working for this store this one occurrence of being deceived has stood above the rest One evening a lady came stampeding through the store with several Forever 21 bags full of clothes and placed them on the counter I quickly approached her seeing her urgency and asked what I could help her with As she dumped each bag of clothes out she exclaimed that she wanted to return the items Without even asking why she needed to return the items she started spilling this long sob story about how she had previously took her daughter out on a shopping spree a few days after her daughter stole money and moved her things out but forgot the clothes Therefore she was returning everything because she had no money I was trying to be sympathetic but her story was showing dozens of red flags I had a puzzling look on my
