The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an acclaimed novel written by Mark Twain that is susceptible to extensive amounts of criticism The story takes place in Missouri after the Civil War on the banks of the Mississippi River The novel starts off with Huck Finn explaining his new life that he is not delighted about with the Widow and what had happened before he moved in with her As the story progresses Hucks drunken father known as Pap orders that Huck should give him the money he has When the Widow and the local judge Judge Thatcher find out they try to get legal custody of Huck Finn Pap starts to hang around town for months while harassing Huck Pap kidnaps Huck and keeps him in a cabin across the river With a fear of getting beaten worse than he already had Huck killed a pig spread the blood throughout the cabin and escaped by faking his own death Huck then hid on the island in the middle of the Mississippi River known as Jacksons Island After remaining on the island for a few days and watching the townspeople search for his dead body he encounters Jim Jim is one of Miss Watsons slaves the Widows sister Huck and Jim team up and camp out on the island A storm strikes the area and floods the Mississippi River Huck and Jim find a house floating in the river they get in and find a man who had been shot but only Jim saw the mans face A few nights later Huck and Jim are separated then they find each other and continue down the river Later they meet a duke and a dauphin who continue to commit crimes throughout the novel The worst crime they committed was selling Jim to a local farmer Huck finds a way to rescue Jim
