Eventually we all have to accept full and total responsibility forour actions everything we have done and have not done Hubert SelbyJr said this quote in his novel Requiem for a Dream Learning toaccept responsibility for your actions is a very mature and oftendifficult thing to do I never would have thought that two nutty animalswould teach me that lesson in responsibility in a way I would neverforget The story starts about six years ago when my mother and I were runningerrands We had our groceries in the back and the mail had been pickedup from the post office the only thing left to do was to pick up mulchfor the attention deprived garden at home We arrived at Bomgaards andbeing the 11 year old I was I didnt want to go in I reluctantly leftmy car and walked into the superstore As my mom talked to a salesassistant I wandered off looking at everything the store had to offerwhen a pungent smell made me stop in my tracks Below me were two largesteel buckets one full of chicks and the other ducklings Theircuteness overwhelmed me and instantly I knew I must have one I ran tofind my mother in the maze of aisles and dragged her back to the bucketsof fowl It took her less than a millisecond to say no but I wasrelentless in my begging and eventually she caved The choosing processwas difficult but ultimately I chose two ducklings One completelyyellow Daisy and the other was yellow with spots of black Daffy Eachwere no larger than the size of my hand a place that they foundcomfortable enough to defecate on We set up their home in an unfinishedroom off our garage They had a large clear tub full of hay that wasconstantly kept warm by the heat lamp above them Every day they wouldbe fed played with and their cage would be cleaned As time progressed and the ducklings
