The idea that innocence cannot be returned once lost or that it cannot be maintained all throughout a humans full lifetime is highly debatable Many people desire to be older when they are younger but as people grow older they desire to regain their youth Through Holdens struggle and realizations in The Catcher in the Rye the unique message transmitted in We are broken and the desire to maintain innocence forever despite any obstacles in the lyrics of Forever Young the authors Salinger Paramore and The Youth Group communicate that the effort to prevent loss of innocence is common but the loss of innocence is inevitable and can never be regained or avoidedIn the novel The Catcher in the Rye Holdens character expresses various ideas that exhibit his ambition and ignorance at the same time His ignorance becomes obvious when he speaks to Phoebe about his fantasiesAnyway I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all Thousands of little kids and nobodys around-nobody big I mean-except me And Im standing on the edge of some crazy cliff What I have to do I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if theyre running and they do look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them Thats all Id do all day Id just be the catcher in the rye and all I know its crazy but thats the only thing Id really like to be I know its crazy Salinger 173In this quote Holden envisions himself as an individual with a duty to prevent children from falling off a cliff The quote has a metaphorical meaning the clueless children roaming around the field symbolize innocent youth the cliff symbolizes the corruption of society and Holden is illustrated as the person who has the duty of preventing the youth from losing their innocence This scene figuratively
