Have you ever been backpacking Well if you have then you understand the importance of staying on course Not to long ago a friend and I decided to go on a backpacking trip to Mena Arkansas It was only a 2 day trip so the plan was to only hike about 9 miles We arrived in Mena on a Friday night and set camp The plan was to hike half the trail on Saturday and then finish the rest on Sunday Everything was going according to plan We had a beautiful hike through the mountains on Saturday and made it to our campsite about an hour before sundown After setting up camp and eating dinner it was beginning to get dark outside I was feeling uneasy about spending the night in the forest because of some information I had received that morning My grandfathers health went down hill quickly and I was told he only had days before he passed I convinced my friend that we should finish the hike tonight and get home so I could see my granddad We only had about 4 miles left of the trip so we knew we could make it back Being the arrogant and stubborn men that we are we packed camp and headed back to the car with about an hour of sunlight left We didnt spend much time making sure that we had everything nor did we spend much time looking for the right trail I had hiked this trail several times so I was confident that we were on the right path I thought it would be a good idea for us to run so we could take advantage of what little light we had As we continued down the trail my confidence increased as the trail decreased Before I knew it we were in the thickets parts of the Ouachita forest I was still convinced that this was the right path We
