Love can change a person the way a parent can change a baby- awkwardly and often with a great deal of mess Lemony Snicket With that in mind if love can change a person and a person can change love wouldnt it mean that being open to growth and a compassionate heart go perfectly together In How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and The Curtain Tortilla we can see how both ideas are brought together and perfectly combine Even though both ideas are expressed somewhat differently and take place in different parts of the world they all go towards a new beginning Ultimately both authors intend to capture the love that their characters have towards each other and how that love came about to make them grow internally To fully understand this concept and what the authors are trying to tell us I will analyze some of the characters that show the qualities of being open to growth loving and compassionate In The Curtain Tortilla the first change that I am able to see from all the characters is the change that Candido the Mexican immigrant had to make in order to better the lives of his family and him Candido a man of pride used to be married to his wifes older sister Resurrecion who cheated on him while Candido was working in the United States When Candido went back to Mexico he found out about his wifesinfidelityand eventually left her He then decided to go back to the United States and take America with him When they get to the United States Candido finds out that America is pregnant with his child Now more than ever Candido must be open to this new idea and work hard to have enough money by the time the baby arrives Candido at first struggles to find a job because of his injured arm and must let America take charge of making money
