Loyalty is defined as A strong feeling of support or allegiance In the play King Lear written by William Shakespeare the play is about an old king dividing his kingdom into three equal parts but later on disowns one of his daughters Cordelia for not following his commands He pays the price by giving his land too his two ungrateful daughters who later on abandon him out of their castle and unfortunately leads him to insanity They are many betrayals in the play including the plot and the sub plot which leads to the downfall of Lear and characters around him In the tragic play when one is faced with loyalty and disloyalty it is shown through the characters Cordelia Edgar Kent Servants Goneril Regan and Edmund that Shakespeare demonstrates being loyal will reap the benefits or otherwise suffer misfortuneFirst and Foremost loyalty is shown as a key aspect during this play because we see loyalty playing a big part with King Lear and Gloucester and their faithful children In the beginning of the play King Lear makes a very hasty decision to disown his favourite daughter Cordelia who he not knows at the time is the most faithful to him When King Lear was asking for each of his daughters to praise him with love Cordelia responded with I love your Majesty According to my bond No more nor lessKing Lear1194-95 Cordelia knowing that her father had made rash decision to disown her when she had found out about Lear being abandoned by her sisters She were ever so ready to assist him and try to cure his mental state because of Cordelias loyalty they were able to get Lear back to his usual mental state This relationship between father and daughter shows how loyalty is truly a powerful theme in this play and shall always prevail Another relationship that proves loyalty plays an important role involves the sub plot characters Edgar and his
