Mainstream culture is all about what dictates and influences the current trends and what is labelled by ordinary people as normal behaviour and fashionBy definition it describes how the masses are influenced in taste through advertising word-of-mouth and peer pressure to follow the rules and guidelines of a pre-determined behaviourBeing mainstream involves the idea and attitudes of everything around us it becomes the dominated trends that we see as part of our daily lives and it becomes common and no longer different or individualWhat is normal The Oxford definition of normal is to conform to a standard the usual typical or the expected Oxford dictionary Only around twenty years ago things that we now see as making a statement or showing your individuality used to be abnormal or different and were frowned upon These people and the things that they did were stereotyped as bad and scrutinized or looked at in horror and disgust because they did not conform to the things that society was used to seeing Once we adapt from child to adult most of us will have learned to be non confrontational in our ideas and attitudes This affects our choices in life how we spend our time and what we wear and how we furnish our homes We will find common bonds with our family friends and neighbours by doing the same sort of things done by the majority of people around us It seems to become increasingly difficult as we grow older to accept that not everyone has learned to conform and there is a need for people to express their creativity and to be different and individual Looking back there has to be admiration for the first musicians that challenged the traditional sounds of what we now call classical music The first artists who dared to be different looked for inspiration at cultures other than their own and this influenced not only their artwork but the way
