It is my understanding that multiple relationships occur when a counselor assumes more than one role simultaneously with a client When this happens the counselor transcends the role of counselor and becomes a friend supervisor teacher or other role I plan to work primarily with adolescents once I am able to practice I believe that I will need to be able to become a trusted person in the clients life in order for the client to get the most out of the therapeutic relationship I can foresee that lines could possible become blurred as I work with these adolescents and try to maintain a trusting and open relationship without creating too strong of a bond I have heard other professors and counselors who work with adolescents speak about how hard it is to maintain boundaries with some children They have said that it is particularly hard to maintain boundaries with some children who are being abused in their homes I can foresee that this could be an issue for me My hope is to be able to work with adolescent girls in my hometown of West Memphis Arkansas Because I was once an adolescent girl dealing with the same issues that these girls are currently facing it is likely that I will find myself identifying with the clients with which I work Being empathic without allowing countertransference to take place will possibly become a challenge The line that divides the client and her experiences from myself and my own experiences may begin to become less defined and the similarities between us become more apparentBoundary lines may also become blurred for the client as well While trying to maintain the delicate balance of professional counselor and trusted person with which the client can feel free to share openly the details of their thoughts and feelings multiple relationships may occur I think that it will also be a challenge to help the client to keep in mind
