Malnutrition in India As of the year 2000 40 of children in India suffer from malnutrition In some parts of India such as Madhya Pradesh as many as 55 of children suffer from being under nourished Despite being the worlds leader in milk production India has not been able to get its problem with nutrition under control India accounts for a little less than 20 per cent of the worlds child population but 40 per cent of malnourished children in the world 53 per cent of children under four are moderately or severely undernourished while 30 per cent of newborns are significantly underweight While the problem may seem that it can be easily related to poverty only 40 of malnutrition can be associated with poverty A factor that has been blamed for the malnutrition among children has much to do with the culture One study revealed that in households with pregnant women that the pregnant woman does not receive any treatment out of the ordinary An example given was the last piece of meat left over after a meal In a situation where there is only one piece of meat left over the pregnant woman is the last in the household to receive it The husband and breadwinner of the household is the first then the elder people living in the household next the children and finally the pregnant woman Surveys have found that malnutrition is most common among children under two and that adolescent girls and women are most vulnerable to nutrient deficiencies Here culture is obviously playing a significant role in the resulting malnourished child Another example of cultures impact on malnourishment among children is the example of misconceptions about the health of a mother Many people believe that the woman carrying the childs health has no bearing on the health of the child that she carries As a result no special concern is given to her health Another concern
