Marshall McLuhan once said All media exists to invest our lives with artificial perceptions and arbitrary values McLuhan is a well renowned philosopher on the communication theory Throughout his life McLuhan studied the effects of media on the newer generations McLuhan defines media as technological extensions of the body illustrating that media and technology are practical parts of daily life and culture In Don DeLillos White Noise DeLillo utilizes his character Jacks postmodern cultural surroundings to shape his psychological issues Throughout the novel Jack finds himself slowly becoming consumed by the media and shows that he watches causing his imagination to go haywire The media and technology surround Jack wherever he goes causing the white noise that he always hears in the background and affecting how he perceives the world around him Television is one key element with a constant impact on Jacks life It affects the way he views the world around him and has a major impact on his imagination throughout the novel As well Jack derives meaning from what he sees in the television and uses his imagination to bring these views to life As Jack drives Henrich to school he sees the crossing guard and pictures her in a soup commercial taking off her oilskin hat as she entered the cheerful kitchen where her husband stood over a pot of smoky lobster bisque a smallish man with six weeks to live22 Jack is unable to see the woman on the street as just an average woman He instantly associates her with television conveying that those are the thoughts and that are consuming his life DeLillo uses diction when he describes the cheerful kitchen and the smallish man who only has six weeks to live The dying man parallels Jacks own fear of death The cheerful kitchen gives off the impression that the wife is somewhat content
