The Medieval Era in Europe was riddled with conflict strife and warfare War and religion dominated much of the political world during the Medieval Era Nearly all towns became fortified with walls and other defenses In Europe warfare was frequent and led to many innovations made to weapons and architecture during this time Some of the most important changes were in melee weapons projectile weapons defenses and siege instrumentsThe sword one of the most iconic Medieval Era weapons evolved from the Bronze Age Once the use of iron in sword making became common entire armies were fielded with swords Iron swords were stronger and they were able to be made longer more durable and edges were made so the weapon could be used for cutting and stabbing In the 10th century the use of tempered steel was more common allowing for better weapons The standard sword for soldiers of the Medieval Era was the Arming Sword they were generally around three feet long and light enough to be used in battle or on horsebackA distinct type of sword evolved from the Arming Sword by the 1300s The hand and a half sword was longer than other swords It also had a larger handle that allowed for someone to use two hands for harder blows and stronger strikes The hand and a half sword led to the invention of the long sword which became one of the deadliest weapons in Europe by the 1400s The long sword had nearly double the length than an arming sword These swords were popular because of their ability to add power to the thrusting and cutting actions Some variants of this sword were over six feet in length There were many unique variants and types of swords in existence by the end of Medieval Era it was not uncommon for financially modest families to have at least one sword in their household The sword was one of the
