The film Whats Eating Gilbert Grape directed by Lassa Hallstrom is a drama about a young adult named Gilbert who cares for his brother Arnie and his family Gilbert Grape is a young man that unconsciously forfeits his entire personal desires He carries the responsibility of keeping a watchful eye on his unusual family but in particular his brother Arnie who is a mentally impaired young boy Before his dad Albert commits suicide he express to Gilbert that it was his job to maintain the house Gilbert was pressured to become the man of the house and to sustain his household After many years of having a dull life Becky unexpectedly appears in his life and a strong relationship is developed between themGilberts life has become restless taking care of Arnie and unconsciously trying to be a father figure for his family Gilberts focus on his familys wellness has been his primary goal which has diminished any possibility to a life of his own The absence of Albert has taken a big toll on the family in particular on his mom Momma was once the prettiest girl in town but now she is extremely overweight and a burden to her children Ellen Amy and Gilbert have assumed the responsibility over her and Arnie and at times Gilberts leadership in the family has not been easily accepted For Instance when they are having dinner and Ellen mocks Gilbert with All right dad Ok dad Causing Arnie to start yelling making everyone lose their temper All the family difficulties Gilbert faces throughout the film quietly sneak on him emotionally When Gilberts life doesnt appear to be going anywhere Becky a free spirit dreamer girl without life boundaries will give Gilbert a meaning to his life As Becky and her aunt pass through town their truck breaks down and they have to stay in Endora until they can fix it Consequentially Gilbert starts to socialize
