Michael Oher is one of the finest offensive tackles to ever play in the NFL He was picked twenty-third overall by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL Draft however the challenges Michael faced during his journey to the top is unparalleled to any other NFL player As a child Michael faced the challenges of growing up in one of the worst neighborhoods of Memphis Tennessee Everyday he was surrounded by the dangers of drugs alcohol and gangs with no adult supervision but because of his strong will and determination he was able to distance himself from them and learn many lessons which could be applied to our own livesMichael went to eleven different schools during his first nine years as a student He also repeated both first and second grades Yet Michaels education was the least of his worries because at home he had almost no supervision from his parents His father Michael Senior was constantly in and out of prison while his mother Denise was an alcoholic and a drug addict Due to this Michael was put into foster care at the age of seven and was constantly in and out of various foster homes Then when Michael was sixteen he met Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy who allowed him to stay with them and their two children and later adopted him This part of Michaels life could be considered a turning point because with the help of his new family he was able to catch up with his education Also it was the Touhys who first introduced him to football Many people say that because of Leigh Anne and Sean Touhy Michael became who he is today but that is not completely true Yes they did have a great influence on his life but it was his strong will and determination that enabled him to get through difficult times Being able to stay away from the temptations of drugs alcohol and gangs
