Stuart mill believes that we lack a criteria of right and wrong which basically means we have no principles that determine what actions are right or wrong Therefore he invents this idea called the Principles of Utility or Consequentialism It basically determines actions to be right when they result in happiness and wrong when they result in unhappiness or pain Mills Principle of Utility Consequentialism focuses on the consequences and ignores the motives and characters 19-20 He believes that the assessment of the action differs from the assessment of the consequences As long as an actions outcome promotes happiness the action is right For example when a man who donates to a charity that his neighbor hates but secretly only donates the money to anger his neighbor This man is considered to be doing a right action by the Principle of Utility In this situation the positive consequences the man donating to a charity completely outweighs the negative ones the man angering his neighbor Sadly when faced with actions that are quick making where you dont have enough time to sit and ponder the possible consequences of an action the principle of utility cannot be applied When making quick decisions time for actions is limited so Mill created the secondary moral principles rule These secondary rules promote social utility happiness These rules insure that people use common sense morality when making judgments about future actions Telling the truth do not kill protecting freedom and avoiding deception are basic examples of what common morality means Mill believes that cultivating a disposition to honesty in ones self and in others has good social benefits In order to make agreementstransactions there must be an amount of trust between both parties Since honesty is conducive to trust this principle supports social well-being The fact that honest people are more likely to trade and make exchanges with other honest people keeping the trade and money flow in our world alive
