Pericles was a very good leader He had three main goals as a ruler and those were to expand democracy in Athens glorify Athens and to expand and preserve the Athenian Empire While attempting to achieve these three goals Athens grew into a beautiful place that over time had a democratic government In order for all of Pericless goals to be achieved everyone had to be made equal under the law Pericles achieved his three goals to a fair extent by making it possible for everyone to have a say in the governmentIn a well working democracy everyone should be equal Pericles had a good working government because he achieved this to a fair extent In Pericless funeral oration speech Pericles said that everyone should have a say in the government Power is in the hands not of a minority but the whole people Doc 1 Pericles thought that in Athens everyone should have a say in the government no matter what class he or she was in Before Pericles ruled it was harder for people in lower classes to participate in government because there was no salary in a government job Then Pericles made it possible for people who participated in the government to get paid By doing this he made it possible for anyone who had the proper education to serve in the government based on their ability to do so and not their social status Another thing that Pericles did to expand democracy was make it so class didnt matter and education did everyone is equal before the law Doc 1 This made it possible for anyone to part take in the government and therefor democracy was expanded Pericles achieved his goals of preserving and expanding the empire to a fair extent Before Pericles ruled only land owning men could vote and part take in government Then the empire and democracy was expanded when Pericles allowed any male citizen to vote Doc
