Modernism is identified as a rejection of realism which states that science is always the reason The objection that science was the answer ruled out the idea of God Many turned to atheism when modernism was introduced in the 1920s Modernism also became an era disappointment People started to become preoccupied with the meaning of life Literary figures of the time became known as the The Lost Generation The authors of the Lost Generation started to use new techniques and new topics that were never apart of literature before These writers looking for freedom of thought and action changed the face of modern writing Realistic and rebellious they wrote what they wanted and fought censorship for profanity and sexuality They incorporated Freudian ideas into their characters and styles Whitley 2002 A very distinguished modernist writer was F Scott Fitzgerald He lived through the 1920s and some of the actions in his writings reflect actual events in his own life F Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby was an excellent example of modernistic principles Fitzgerald demonstrates modernistic ideals with historical events such as the Jazz Age the use of surrealism and the overall style of writing Fitzgerald uses the Jazz Age as a reflection of modernism in the novel The Great Gatsby Two prevailing symbols from the Jazz Age that were used in the novel include the flappers and the music The characters Jordan and Daisy represent flappers Daisy plays the part of a sweet and innocent woman yet later reveals herself as an adulterer when she is willing to meet with Gatsby someone she once loved Nick asks Daisy to come over to his house to meet Gatsby however tells her not to bring Tom Daisy replies Whos Tom Fitzgerald p 88 which proves that she has recognition of what is about to happen but is fine with it Another symbol from
