Moral IssuesIt can be argued that no other type of medical research in history other than perhaps the research done for the procedure of an abortion has been as morally and ethically controversial as that of stem cell research The possible potential of stem cell science has opened a Pandoras box of both ethical and moral controversy Jones Towns 2004 Since its beginning in 1998 stem cell research has had a huge focus on its goals and means of obtaining them through embryo research by all of society Cohen 2007 Although difficult to distinguish between the ethical and moral issues in point it has been said that nothing can change the position of those who have already taken a moral stance on the issue Holm 2008 and while others such as John R Meyer argue that ethical and moral issues are intimately tied together and often based on religious views Meyer 2000 Yet another view is presented by Towns and Jones is that the two sides are those of the scientist and ethicist with little or no understanding between them Jones Towns 2004 Further opinions are presented in the fact that the ethical issues change depending on what the research will be used for and how the research will be performed Devolder 2005 Regardless of which view that is taken there seems to be some similarities between themMorals and ReligionAs John Meyer has pointed out moral issues tend to stem from religious views Since early stem cell research involved mainly using cells taken from embryos of fetuses this made it seem rather clear cut from a religious stand point If you were a member of a religion that believed all life was sacred then you had a moral obligation to object to stem cell research The main issue of course is that for the stem cells to be harvested the embryo is itself taken apart This destroys the possibility of life and therefore
