It has been quite a while since I met Francoise But as we met in a time that has changed me a lot and maybe him too I have a good and nice memory of himIt was in 2001 and instead of A Space Odyssey I went on a likewise adventures trip to Vancouver in Canada Not until September of that year the world should have been dramatically changed but Francoise and I already met in spring inspired by this unique city that welcomes people from all culture groups with open arms The epicenters of this multicultural togetherness have been the language schools and as chance would have it we decided for the same school CSLI Canadian as a Second Language InstituteIn contrast to most of the other language schools in Vancouver at CSLI it was not only about studying but as well about joint activities and we had a lot of those One activity I like to remember and maybe Francoise might not remember totally took place on June 7th 2001 We headed out spontaneously for English Bay a beautiful beach in the city to sit and chat over a drink and watch the sunset As usual we made a quick stop at a liquor store and whoever could gave some dollars for some cans of beer If we were about twelve students that afternoon and evening that means we came from at least six to eight nations and mostly spoke very different languages I dont believe someone who didnt experience this by oneself can imagine the lively and inspiring atmosphere of such a get-together We all laughed sang and flirted in more than half a dozen languages and when words were important we were able to make conversation in English To me its still fascinating how similar despite all differences and varieties we humans are no matter where were from and how connected we feel when were in same
