My name is Beth and I am a twenty-three year old full time collegestudent at Mercer University Attending Mercer University is thehighest accomplishment of my educational journey thus far I did notstart my education like most American children in fact I was born inArkhangelsk Russia and lived there until the age of seven At the ageof four I was taken from my mother who was an alcoholic by theRussian government put in an orphanage home and resided there until Iwas seven In 1996 two Americans decided to adopt a cute blondehaired blue eyed little girl which just so happened to be me Myfather was in the Air Force at the time serving at Shaw Air Force Base That was the year that my life changed completely and the doors toeducation were opened From Russia my parents and I flew on fourdifferent airplanes until we finally made it home I had arrived at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina to my new homeand family and was about to meet my one year older sister Brittanyfor the first time My first six months living in America I had tolearn how to speak English up until that time my parents and I had atremendously difficult time communicating with one another I rememberat one time getting upset that they could not find my black shoes that Iwas wanting to wear and my mother would look at my father and sister andsay What is she saying As you can tell at the beginning itwas quite difficult to understand one another My parents enrolled mein English lessons but they were only once a month for six months butthey were helpful in learning how to speak English Much to mysurprise my father tells me that I mostly learned how to speak Englishon my own by watching a large amount of television By the time sixmonths had come around
