My attempts to learn Spanish taught me a lesson of greater importance than the language itself Learning a second language is an important lesson to learn in life So much so that in high school they require you to take one year of it at the minimum I do not disagree with its importance but it is not easy task to ask of Unlike math language science history and other staple subjects you have not learned that language every year building up your skills You are expected to take a beginner course first and then a more difficult no in between But with the staple subjects you take a very simple course then slowly build up to a more highly difficult course in the time span of 12 years of grade school When learning a new language its like they expect you to cram your learning of the subject in to two years Maybe this is the reason I never learned it well After concluding a total of three semesters in Spanish I went to Cozumel Mexico on vacation expecting to understand a bit of Spanish that was spoken To the contrary when I arrived I couldnt understand a full phrase that was spoken in Spanish Sure I could understand the foundation words such as Hola Gracias Si Seior Seiorita and fill in words such as Es and Esta but not much beyond that I was surprised I could even get that much with as fast as they all talked You could literally say they were talking a mile a minute Spanish in Mexico is so much different from the Spanish out of a textbook Just as it is with English we talk fast because its what we know We also have created our own slang that we use in everyday language that isnt found in English books I am sure that Mexicans do the same
