Over the summer I had the opportunity to volunteer counsel at Sky Lake for four weeks Over those four weeks I had the chance to work with special needs adults with a range of ability levels as well as with elementary campers When working with special needs adults it takes a certain level of patience and understanding at all points throughout the week while they are at camp Going to camp for them is an adjustment from their normal day-to-day lifestyle that the counselor must be able to understand and handle Through working with elementary campers one is reminded of their youth Working with elementary children also takes a certain amount of patience but also understanding of their point of view of life The point of view from a ten year old is different from that of a soon to be college freshmen By working with each ability level and age group I have learned how to handle diverse environments and situationsAlthough I didnt receive compensation I feel that I earned from those weeks many life lessons I learned time management skills creative solution to many problems as well as comprehension of the many different paths of life I feel that by counseling I have become prepared to enter a college environment because I have some of the most important life lessons while assisting others and taking care of myself By already having the background of working with special needs individuals I feel that I am able to start a special education field of study with a passion and interest for this program I also feel that I am prepared for an art education minor by having taken many art classes in high school such as drawing sculpture ceramics as well as advertise and design I have worked in a number of ways that has allowed me to gain a better understanding of what art is and how to make it effectively This is a
