This semester I have been observing a first grade inclusion dual language English Spanish class There are 30 students in the class The majority of the students are English Language Learners and 4 of the students received special education services before or after school Even thought is a crowed classroom the teacher tries her best to create a safe learning environment by maintaining the space organized She combined 2 trapezoid shape tables converting into a hexagon shape to be able to have six students per table Everything around the classroom is label such as homework journals shelf bathroom passes library books table number etc Every bulletin board in the classroom is used very wisely and with a clear purpose The bulletin boards in the back of the classroom are organized by content areas displaying students outstanding work In the social studies board there are pictures of students family portrait title My Family underneath the students wrote the activities they do with each family member On others bulletin boards around the classroom she have vocabulary words wall and classroom rules The teacher put a great effort in maintaining the library organized and assessable to the students She separates the books into basket by the reading level which makes it easier for students to select a book quicker The library is mostly use after students come back from lunch they are required to select a book to read silently for 10 minutes During those ten minutes students will not only get the opportunity to read book in English but as well calm down from the excitement of the cafeteria recess and transition students into the English part of the day During my observation on March 7 2013 Ms Sanchez taught a science lesson which focused on the cycle of a butterfly from a caterpillar to butterfly After completing this lesson the student were able to understand the four stages life cycle
