I chose to interview a music student at the University of SouthernMississippi Victor Rodriguez came to Southern Miss five years ago andwas happy to sit down and talk about his culture and the culture he haslearned here in the United States while studying music In my interviewI first asked the question What are some of the difficulties you facedwhen you first moved here and what was it like learning a completelydifferent culture and language It was very difficult to adjust fromliving in spain and already knowing the customs and the language tomoving to the United States where I had to learn the norms of societyand the basics of american culture Victor Rodriguez personalinterview October 2 2013 University of Southern MississippiPerforming Arts Center unpublished Victor told me that the biggesthurdle for him when he came to the United States five years wasdefinitely learning the language and finding friends he mostly confidedin other students within the music department who themselves had takenthe exact steps and journey that Victor was now embarking on Moving toa country where I knew almost no one was pretty overwhelming just initself but I also faced a huge hurdle and uphill battle in learning thelanguage but I overcame that with hard work and with the help of otherslike me who had been here before That was huge for me He said thathaving the language institute at Southern Miss was wonderful for him andothers like him who are looking to attend school here at our wonderfuluniversity I had always wondered about the challenges students like himoften faced when first arriving to the United States The next question I presented in my interview was How is the culturein your home country different from the culture you have experienced sofar as a citizen of the United States I was told that the culturedfrom where they were from in Spain varied greatly from the culture andcustoms of some of the united states they had seen
