I grew up in a Catholic family but we are the farthest thing from religious Although I attended a catholic elementary school the only time I went to church was the required Wednesday mass We sometimes attended church on holidays but forget about Sundays We never went then I didnt understand what it meant to believe in God I believed in God because I was taught to believe in Him Over the years though I still do not attend church my faith and understanding in God has become my own I believe in Him not because I am told to but because I truly believe When I was little I saw God as this big man with a white fluffy beard Actually he held a strong resemblance to Santa Claus In my mind He sat up on a large cloud in the sky and watched the world below him He decided who was going to heaven and who was going to hell When he was sad it rained and when he was happy the sun would come out Obviously that is not what comes to mind when I think about God today When I hear or read the word God I think of the calming feeling that washes over me during a stressful situation I think of the times where things were so hard that it seemed nearly impossible to keep going I think of strength perseverance and the ability to push past fears I think of happiness in times of sadness When I think about where my image of God comes from I think of a lot of things But mostly I think of a rooster My grandpa died of small-cell lung cancer when I was in the eighth grade The day after his funeral my grandma was looking out their kitchen window at the backyard when she spotted a big beautiful rooster She went to get some bird feed and when she
