There is a saying among the Kurds No friends but the mountains For centuries conqueror after conqueror has driven these once nomadic tribes deep within their beloved mountains to preserve their culture their language and their lives In 1988 the year I was born the mountains once again became the friends of many Kurds including my family who sought refugee from Sadam Hussein regime and the torture that he inflected upon the Kurds I was born on May 31st 1988 in Kurdistan two months after the heinous chemical attack on the Kurds by Sadam and his dictatorship regime Though my family and I have survived the chemical attacks we were not out of harms way just yet Countless air booming burning of houses and village and burying people alive was just some of the many dangers still lurking ahead of us After countless months of fleeing into the mountains to seek refuge my family along with thousands of other Kurds decided to make an escape on foot into neighboring Turkey My father couldnt have picked a better time to escape this war torn country because the day we fled our village Sadam Husseins regime had started to bomb houses and we later found out at one of those houses was ours Making the journey with hundreds of other Kurds into neighboring Turkey on foot through those rugged mountains and rivers seemed to be harder than one had imagine My parents recount the journey vividly as if it happened yesterday My two older siblings 3 and 2 years old were put in a wooden box and put on top of a donkey that was led through the mountains by my father My mother carried me in her hands because I was still an infant As we made our way through the mountains and rivers the donkey carrying my siblings fell into the river along with my two siblings My brother suffered a deep cut
