When you grow up in a military household people have the impressionthat your childhood consists of travel excitement discipline andnormalcy However compared to my partner Alix my childhood seemeddull and restricted My family lived in two countries while I wasgrowing up but we didnt explore them The discipline aspect of themilitary life may have been the only normal part of my childhoodI was born in Fairbanks Alaska in 1983 on a military base My parentswere young and inexperienced Both had only had a few datingexperiences and didnt really know what marriage was about When I was3 my parents divorced My mother remarried when I was 6 and her newhusband Sam became my step-dad Alix was born in 1981 in CincinnatiOhio She was the seventh of nine children born to her father but onlyshe and her older brother had the same mother Her parents were olderhad been married before and decided not to marry each other until Alixherself was two years old It seems they took their time and made surethey were on the right track Alixs parents believed in physical activity and gave her the option toplay every sport she desired It was a way to channel her energy andinstilled in her a sense of accomplishment Soccer softballgymnastics swimming basketball volleyball dance and track fieldyou name it she tried it Alix grew up outdoors and fell in love withthe open air On the other hand my mother didnt allow me to playsports because she didnt want me to get hurt She thought I should bea piano playing ballet dancing cheerleading mascot Girls weresupposed to be pretty and dainty I was more of a tomboy so I wasntthe least bit excited about any of those prospects However I grewused to the indoors and sweating in the heat of the open air did notmake my list of favorite things
