My main research focuses on three areas motivational determinants of student engagement in physical education gender and diversity issues in physical activity participation and the development of teacher self-efficacy of physical education teacher education PETE students On Motivational DeterminantsI am interested in finding out what motivate students to be active learners in physical education Particularly I have examined student achievement goals self-determined motivation and self-efficacy believes as these constructs are primary factors that affect students motivation and behavior in learning My inquiries in searching for these motivational determinants have resulted in four national presentations first author or co-authored These studies revealed that achievement goals specifically mastery approach goals significantly predicted students expectancy-value motivation self-regulated learning effort and intention for future physical activity participation Self-determination motivation also predicts students effort and intention My colleagues and I also conducted a qualitative study examining student perceptions of choice and teacher support using constant comparison analysis method I believe that this line of work on motivational determinants in physical education can provide empirical evidence to inform research and improve practice in the future On Gender and Diversity Issues Another research interest of mine is to explore gender and diversity issues in physical education and after-school physical activity programs In a manuscript I am preparing to submit to the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education my colleagues and me explored gender differences on the relationships between achievement goals and self-determined motivation in physical activity classes Multiple group Structural Equation Modeling SEM analysis showed that performance-approach goal ie striving to outperform others significantly predicted female students controlled motivation but not for male students This result reveals that when enrolled in a competitive atmosphere female students are less likely to be autonomous motivated than male students Though physical activity self-efficacy has been explored within the population with white ethnicity as dominant few studies have explored how it operates among children from other ethnicity backgrounds In my doctoral dissertation I examined the
