Pilgrims Hope Homeless Shelter was a place of last resort for the tiredfaces I saw every Tuesday There were good days and bad days some moreeventful than others they came with fights complaints and mishaps inabundance With these passing events nothing had affected me more thanwhat seemed to be the longest Tuesday of my life Prepared and hopeful for a quiet day at the shelter I mindlessly typeddata into the computer filed paper work into their assigned smoothmanila folders rewrote applications and prepared information sheets Asusual the three eleven year old boys were coming in and out of theoffice to say hello and chat It was just a regular day By four oclock it was almost about time to head out for the day I waskeeping an eye on a one year old little girl She was staring at apurple crayon as though it were the most fascinating thing in the worldwhen the phone rang I had thought nothing of it until the room suddenlyfelt cold I watched the light run out of my supervisors eyes as sheaccepted the news that had just been given to her We held our breathuntil the words came out of her mouth Department of Children andFamilies was taking one of the boys away from his mother now Suddenly the baby girl was shoved into my arms and we were hurriedacross the hall There was a deep pain in my stomach and my arms feltlike jelly while holding the baby who seemed to be growing heavier andheavier Within the next five minutes the police officer entered in his darkblue power suit leading the DCF worker into the building I hated him atfirst until I saw his earnest look of disgust for the situation I couldnot imagine having to be the enforcer of such a deed it made me shudderat the thought My immediate hatred for the officer began to fade as Isaw through the strength that his job required Looking
