Explanation of why you choose the organizationI choose to do my service hours at the Womens Center located on Murray State Universitys campus The reason I choose to volunteer there is because in the future I plan on working with women who have been battered and abused I love to help people my goal is to plant seeds into peoples life and help guide them to success This organization has the same goals as I do which is why I choose to volunteer there Review of the organizations history purpose programs orientation training and any suggested improvements HistoryThe Murray State Womens Center was founded in 1992 By Dr Don Robertson it was his first year here at Murray State He had come from Marshal University and was so impressed with their work so he went on to ask a lady by the name of Kim whom he had talked to many times to write a proposal so that Murray State could have a center She agreed and then became the first part-time director of the Womens Center Once the center opened it was very small in size with limited resources such as one books self and a couple of handouts The center always had Graduate Assistant helping The programs were very limited and focused more on the faculty instead of the students In 1996 Jane Etheridge became the new Womens Center director She worked tirelessly and brought programs such as Realities on Campus Take Back the Night Crazy in Love and Room with a View to Murray States campus In spring of 2012Jane retired after serving the MSU community for 15 yearsHer contribution provided growth to the Womens Center that is immeasurable and will not be forgotten This year marks the 21st Anniversary of the Womens Center founding Much has changed but their mission has stayed the sameTheWomens Center of Murray State promotes gender equity and seeks to improve and enhance the living learning
