A tornado a hurricane a flood a tsunami nature is constantly toiling Always at work-and it seems to be always at work against us Us being us humans As literature has developed many authors have adapted a writing technique which focuses on the undeniable strength of nature This new technique and philosophy promotes the power of nature and its superiority over human kind This idea is displayed through the popular genre called naturalism Due to natural power and strength humans never come out on top of a battle opposing nature Although works of literature with naturalistic aspects tend to be pessimistic in Stephen Cranes The Open Boat he capitalized the unbiased forces of nature to illuminate his genuine desire of survival Ultimately Crane suggests human ambition overpowers natures force despite the countering belief that there is no force stronger than the vigor of natures power The pessimistic values of naturalism are a literary style which suggests human struggle Naturalism typically reflects human resolution to overcome the struggle through the plotline American Realism 32 Usually such stories will contain a conflict between man and nature Writers incorporate this type of conflict to display how strong the force of the cruel and indifferent universe is Soldiers Courage 2 As the resolution evolves human strength is found to be incomparable to the strength of nature According to the ideas of naturalism nature does not promise success for its victims who are always humans Dooley 1 In fact it tends to promise the contradicting idea Humans will fail they will tend to be destroyed defeated and devastated in the end They have no chance against this higher force Death is common in naturalism as well as the downfall of ones life The pessimism of naturalistic writers is displayed though their devastating ending to stories and harsh devastations to the human race Natures force is inescapable and its intentions incomprehensible As nature instills intense pressure
