In 1931 thirteen years after the end of World War I the International Olympic Committee awarded the eleventh Olympic games set to take place in 1936 to Berlin Germany The bestowal of the games happened prior to any indications of a future Nazi regime and two years before Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was even elected Nonetheless very soon after the decision the rise of the Nazis began With their strong beliefs in the superiority of a mainly white German Aryan race they took over the German country A hatred for other races was also among their main principles Believing they should be enslaved or killed the Nazis targeted their hatred towards the Jewish people The election in 1933 for chancellor of Germany was won by Adolf Hitler In order to hide their anti-semitic agenda and plans for world domination Hitler and his Nazi party impressed visitors of the 1936 Berlin Olympics with a spectacular venue and amazing entertainment USHMM When the world came to Berlin they were amazed with the pageantry and success of the games The Berlin Olympics were used to hide the brutal intentions of the Nazi regime through pageantry film and medal successHiding behind the mask of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin was the extreme anti-semitism within the Nazi beliefs In march of 1933 just months after Hitler came to power the Nazis opened their first concentration camp called Dachau Also in 1933 35 kilometers north of Berlin another camp named Sachsenhausen was opened These concentration camps werent for Jewish prisoners but for opposers of the Nazi beliefs and anyone who was suspected to be an enemy of the party They were held at these camps in very bad conditions and brutal abuseScrapbook Pages One year before the games started in 1935 the Nuremberg Laws were passed The purpose of these laws were to take away the civil rights of the Jewish
